Brief Introduction of the School Originally, the Marxism Research Institute and the School of International Relations was called the School of Marxism . Northeast Normal University has had a long historic tradition and a conventional superiority in theoretical education of Marxism and in the work of ideology and politics and is one of the universities, where theoretical education of Marxism has been systematically developed at the earliest time after the founding of the People's Republic of China . Since 1952, Northeast Normal University has taken the intensification of the systematic development of Marxist theoretical education as one of the three basic principles for the construction and development of the university. In 1953, during the period when Proletarian Revolutionist and famous educationist Cheng Fangwu served as the principal and secretary of the Communist Party Committee in the university, he has led to establish 4 teaching and research offices which were directly subordinated to the university with Cheng Fangwu and other three university leaders as the directors. The study fields covered in the four offices include the history of Chinese revolution, basis of Marxism, political economics, dialectic materialism and historical materialism. After that, theoretical courses of Marxism have been widely set up throughout the university and the school also began to recruit three-year postgraduates, gathering a group of reputed experts and scholars in theoretical teaching and research of Marxism. As a result, at that time, the theoretical education of Marxism and the work concerning subject development of Marxism in Northeast Normal University have taken the lead among universities throughout the country. During the mid and latter period of 1950s, according to the directions of the Central Ministry of Education, our school has once sent a group of backbone teachers to the other brother universities and schools, which has made our due contribution to the university in the intensification of the theoretical education of Marxism. In 1978, after the Third Session of the Eleventh Plenary Meeting of the Communist Party of the People's Republic of China , successively, the university has set up Marxism Research Institute and Research Institute for Ideological and Political Education, which has promoted the fast development of the subjects related to Marxist theories and education of ideology and politics. In 1998, our school has obtained the right to grant doctor's degree in “Marxist Theories and Ideological and Political Education” as a second-class subject. In 2001, our university combined Marxism Teaching and Research Office with the Research Institute for Ideological and Political Education and established the School of Marxism . In November 2002, the school obtained the right to recruit and foster undergraduate students of the specialty in international politics and since 2003, it has recruited students from all over the country. In February 2004, with the foundation of the School of Marxism , Marxism Research Institute and the School of International Relations were established. In 2006, the School obtained the right to grant doctor's degree in “Marxist Theories” as the first-class subject and “Marxist Philosophy” as the second-class subject, which symbolizes that theoretical education and subject construction of Marxism in Northeast Normal University have made epoch-making breakthroughs and development and also indicates that great leap has been made in the construction and development of the school. In accordance with the educational policies of the country, our school has insisted on scientific theories as the guiding principle, taken undergraduate courses as the foundation, taken subjects granting doctor’s degree as the center, taken national and provincial scientific study projects and front-line subjects as the support and taken the establishment of many new subjects which can grant doctor’s degree and master’s degree as the “hinge”. With the orientation of the school, we have combined interior and exterior scientific study forces with distinction of different layers and emphases. We are inclined to develop with the times and expect to form a first-class academic group, produce a large number of high-level research outcomes and foster many high-quality talented people. We tend to develop our school into a nationally influential and northeast first-class base for fostering talented people in theoretical education of Marxism, for scientific study, for experiments in educational reform and for the construction consultation for theoretical courses related to ideology and politics. |
